September 11, 2002 marked a year since the day when thousands of innocent people perished as a result of a terrorist attack. September 11th was a tragic day for America and the whole world, but it also became a day of unity for all the people who cherish freedom and democracy. They rediscovered strength in themselves by gathering around ideals of democracy, human rights and freedoms that have become symbols of free society worldwide. On September 16, it will be two years since the disappearance of Georgiy Gongadze. His murder came as an enormous shock for Ukraine. Georgiy was tortured and killed because he was a journalist and because he was a citizen who stood up for the truth. That atrocious murder became an insult to the Ukrainian society. It also asked the world how it is possible that in Ukraine somebody can torture and kill people for their beliefs with impunity. September 16 should become a day of unity for all those who is strong and ready to fight for the freedom of speech in Ukraine. The Organizing Committee of “Requiem 2002: Face the Truth” calls on Ukrainians all around the world to honor with a minute of silence and candlelight everybody who died for his or her beliefs during the years of Ukraine’s independence. Together we can make a difference. |
