Press-Release: Picket in New York On September 16th, in New York, from 11 am to 1 pm, Ukrainians representing all age groups gathered across from the Ukraine's consulate on 49th St. to protest the murder of Georgiy Gongadze and other activists perished in Ukraine over the years of its independence. All together, there were 15 people gathered at the Consulate. The students, elders and professionals who took time out of their schedules to be there, held signs and handed out flyers to passersby, and those on line at the consulate to renew Visas. They were also speaking with interested non-Ukrainians about the political situation in Ukraine. Those who inquired showed sympathy, wished them luck and gave their support. Signs that were held included quotes like “Stop killing freedom in Ukraine,” a large red board that boasted “This is the color of your government”, “Kuchma, You Can't Handle the Truth,” “Silent media = Corrupt Power”, “Bloody Truth, Bloody Hands” and others. The picket took place with officials peeking out of their second story offices, but they did not come out to confront the picketers. When Picket Leader Yurko Pylyp delivered a letter stating the picket’s purpose, he was stopped at the door and not allowed to enter the consulate. Upon requesting to give the letter to the consulate officials, his request was disregarded and the letter was taken by a worker who said he would pass it on. Interviews were conducted with on-line news-site "Brama," Toronto’s TV station "Kontakt," and "Ukrainian Weekly," all of whom were present. Police officers were also on the scene. Only one worker came out of the consulate on his lunch break and sympathized with our cause. Picket ended with a moment of silence for Georgiy Gongadze and other victims of the regime in Ukraine.
