On behalf of the Forum of Ukrainian Students in America and the Gongadze Foundation, we sincerely thank all those who supported a series of commemorative events “Requiem 2002: Face the Truth!” that took place on September 15-16, 2002, in Washington, DC and other cities across the US and Europe. The events were organized on the date of the disappearance and murder of the Ukrainian journalist Georgiy Gongadze as a tribute to the Ukrainian journalists and political activists, who perished as a result of their professional activities over the last decade. The goal of the events was to draw public attention to the suppression of freedom and democracy in Ukraine, and to the reluctance of the Ukrainian authorities to investigate crimes against the independent political activists. The events included memorial services in Ukrainian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, and Ukrainian Catholic churches across the United States on the morning of September 15th, meeting-requiem and candlelight vigil at Taras Shevchenko’s National Park (22nd and P streets) in Washington, DC, on September 15th from 6 to 9 p.m., an open letter to the President of the United States George W. Bush. The meeting-requiem and candlelight vigil were supported by the Freedom House and the Committee to Protect Journalists. Among other participants of the meeting were representatives of the U.S. Congress, international human rights organizations, and American and Ukrainian political and civic activists. Pickets of Ukrainian embassies and consulates in America and Europe were held on September 16, 2002. The goals of the pickets were: 1. to honor the memory of Georgiy Gongadze, and other journalists and political activists, who perished in Ukraine for taking independent position with regard to the existing regime and its power-holders; 2. to protest against inaction and sabotage by Ukrainian authorities of investigations into the murders of Georgiy Gongadze, Ihor Aleksandrov and others; 3. to show the solidarity of Ukrainians in defending our rights and freedoms as well as the support of the people worldwide for our cause. In English 1. Stop killing freedom in Ukraine! 2. Your Silence Will Not Protect You; 3. Without Rights – You are not Human; 4. Freedom of Speech to Ukraine; 5. Mr. President, Face the Truth! 6. Got Freedom? 7. Protect Journalists – Save the Truth! 8. Ukraine: Hard-Hat Zone for Democracy; 9. Tear Down the Wall of Lies! 10. Silent Media = Corrupt Power; 11. Absolute Power – Corrupts Absolutely; 12. Kuchma, You Can’t Handle the Truth! In Ukrainian 1. Припиніть вбивати свободу в Україні; 2. Мовчанням себе не захистиш; 3. Без прав – Ти не людина; 4.
